“Rain” – Alfredo & Flouer 2014

Rain, Rain….!

“Rain” is a piece my dance partner Alfredo Melendez and I worked on for many months.  The piece is based on three stages of a thunderstorm, which we corresponded to the classical structure of a ballet pas de deux (entrance duet, man’s solo, woman’s solo, adagio & coda) and used blues movements and ideas to execute.  It involved using 3 different pieces of music, a costume change, and an umbrella!

The three stages of a thunderstorm were:

  • Swirling angry clouds and whirl pooling wind (anger)
  • Big fat drops of rain against your window pane (contemplation)
  • A light mist with streaks of sun shining through (celebration, love)

Unfortunately, we did not have the time or energy to truly perfect the piece the way we both would have liked and only got the chance to perform it once for an audience in Atlanta, Georgia at Enter the Blues 2014.  For the moment the piece has been put to rest, and I’m sure either the piece will be resurrected, or the most of the ideas will be torn apart and put into something else.

For myself, this piece was a continuation of an idea I started many years ago as a duet performed by two women about Ophelia.

Below is the video of the piece as we performed it, although we feel that it is in no way finished!  🙂

Below are some photos and video that I used for inspiration.  Enjoy!

2.  The rain has stopped.  Puddles and drips remain.  Alfredo is pensive, contemplative, with residual anger left over from the flood.pensive_puddle_blogsize_thumbripples

3. The sun comes out, the puddles are reduced to warm dew on the grass.  Flouer expresses love, forgiveness, and the intent to make up.

4. Alfredo joins Flouer as the lyrics cry out that we are “Happy together again”.  We splash, smile and play in puddles, then go off together into the bright sunshiny day!
