WORKING WITH FLOUER

With over 15 years dedicating her life to teaching partner dance, Flouer has a ridiculous amount of experience teaching for both groups and individuals.  From huge ballrooms of hundreds of students to intimate classrooms of just a few couples; from long standing advanced partnerships to individuals who just started dancing, Flouer values it all.

She is known for her warm, encouraging way of challenging you to grow in your dancing.  She is known for her values of artistry and personal expression, complimented by her ability to break down any movement into incredibly specific detail.  Coming from an academic background, Flouer emphasises contextual dance history and loves offering simple yet profound ways to give structure to your personal improvisations.

And in the end of it all, she’ll help you use your partner dance skills as a metaphor for becoming more confident and relationally skilled in the rest of your life.

“I felt really secure and welcomed in your classes.I absolutely love your calm and peaceful way of teaching and the idea of the concept class:  Clear and structured, learned a lot. It was a pleasure.”  — Lui, Leipzig Germany

ONLINE PERSONAL LESSONS

Taking personal lessons is your chance to learn at the convenience of your schedule, with lessons tailored to your individual needs.  Online lessons by yourself or with a partner are an easy way to keep dance a regular part of your life, even when in remote areas.

Choreography feedback and teacher supervisions to go over local curriculum are particularly useful online at a lower rate than in person.

Lessons are available singly or in packages.

If you want an in-person lesson at an event or on my travel schedule, check out where I am on the calendar.

Fusion Teacher Trainings

Many people around the world have asked over the years “but, how do you teach fusion dancing when it is such an open form?!”.  Flouer has spent the last decade and a half answering that question, so this year she has teamed up with Mark Carpenter from California to offer two rounds of fusion teacher trainings to share their combined knowledge with the world.

The trainings will take place in May of 2024, one in NYC and the second one in Berlin.

Check out the links below to learn more, or feel free to email Flouer to ask a question.

“The blues lesson: It was very ambitious! Quite cool squeezing so much history and create a timeline like that in just a few hours of blues lessons.  The amount of historical background in the dance lessons was novel to me and I really enjoyed it. Gave me inspiration to learn more. ”  — Johanna, Stockholm Sweden

WHERE IS FLOUER?

WHAT IS BLUES?

The most basic definition of blues dancing is simply dancing to blues music.

The international community of partner dancers that I teach within considers the label blues dancing an “umbrella term”, meaning a term that covers many styles of dance to match the many different styles of blues music.  We generally focus on styles of blues that date from the 1800’s to the early 1970’s, and don’t include music that involves a lot of modern rock influences.

Blues Dancing is brought together by an overall aesthetic, which is entirely rooted in African American movement.  It places a high value on improvisation, polyrhythm, call and response, and solo movement expression inside partnership.

WHAT IS FUSION

Fusion Partner Dancing is a community of worldwide partner dancers who are interested in dancing “outside” the boxes of traditional forms (such as tango or waltz).  Instead of dancing a specific form to a specific kind of music, they draw from the many techniques of all partner dances to create personal, improvisational expressions to music.

Because dancers are coming from such diverse backgrounds, fusion dance can look and feel very different depending on who is dancing it.  In it’s essence, fusion is the ability to be endlessly creative and say “yes!” to your partner, no matter what background they come from.

Most fusion communities use electronic music as a base for their sound because there is no traditional dance form already attached to this genre.  The eclectic moods and rhythms available also inspires people to be creative outside the movement they already know.  Depending on the scene you can also commonly hear classical music, pop, acoustic, folk, blues, soul, R&B, hip hop, sounds from Africa, the Middle East, and more.

BLUES BIOS

Flouer Evelyn is a partner dance instructor and embodied life coach from New York City, currently based out of Turin, Italy. She has been teaching blues around the world since 2010 when she fell in love with the history, music, and movement of these culturally rich dances.

Through all these years she has, of course, won plenty of competitions.  Her movement background includes an MFA in contemporary dance, ten years of Latin Ballroom, and a lifetime of ballet and ice skating.  And that’s all important, but what matters most is that in the classroom Flouer has a warm, encouraging way to help people learn to move their bodies and connect with others.

She is known for her values of artistry and personal expression, complimented by her ability to break down any movement into incredibly specific detail. Using imagery, anatomy, rhythm, and embodiment concepts, she will build your dance from the ground up; all the while teaching you about the musicians you are listening to, why a movement evolved the way it did historically, and the cultural context from where it came. https://flouerdances.com
