WORKING WITH FLOUER

With over 15 years dedicating her life to teaching partner dance, Flouer has a ridiculous amount of experience teaching for both groups and individuals.  From huge ballrooms of hundreds of students to intimate classrooms of just a few couples; from long standing advanced partnerships to individuals who just started dancing, Flouer values it all.

She is known for her warm, encouraging way of challenging you to grow in your dancing.  She is known for her values of artistry and personal expression, complimented by her ability to break down any movement into incredibly specific detail.  Coming from an academic background, Flouer emphasises contextual dance history and loves offering simple yet profound ways to give structure to your personal improvisations.

And in the end of it all, she’ll help you use your partner dance skills as a metaphor for becoming more confident and relationally skilled in the rest of your life.

My session with Flouer was my first ever one-on-one private lesson and I couldn’t recommend her more highly! I was definitely a bit nervous but she was so friendly, welcoming and positive. I really appreciated how she worked together with me to find the right material to focus on (which ended up including a pretty fundamental aspect of turn technique that I wouldn’t have spotted on my own!).

Her explanations of posture and body mechanics are super clear and she had some great tips and exercises to improve my technique going forward. I was absolutely buzzing for the whole afternoon afterwards. Definitely hope to have more lessons with Flouer in the future!

FUSION TEACHER TRAININGS

Flouer has teamed up with Mark Carpenter from California; and together they have embarked on an  intercontinental journey to create a robust Fusion Teacher Training system to solve the complex problem of how to teach fusion dance.

We offer in-person intensives in both Europe and the United States, and easily accessible, online workshops with actionable results.

🔸 INTERNATIONAL ZOOM MEET-UPS:
Every other month FTT participants across continents gather together for Q&A sessions about teaching and organizing with Mark and Flouer.  We catch up on what’s happening in cities around the world, present a special topic, and answer lots of questions!

For the first time we are opening these sessions to other teachers who have not joined us live at our trainings.  If you are a fusion teacher and would like to join us, reach out to see if it is a good fit.
Sessions for 2025 are Sundays Aug 10, Oct 5, Dec 7 at 19 CET/1pm EST/10am PST.

ONLINE CLASSES: THE BLUES ROOM

I feel honored to be able to offer the blues community online access to one of the most essential courses I’ve developed over my years of teaching blues dance: Blues Moves Family Tree.

In the “Family Tree” I’ll guide you through foundational blues movements, showing how they connect, evolve, and shape each other. By taking apart and drilling the small movements that make up each “move,” you’ll gain fluency and agency over your dancing, deepening your ability to partner these solo movements with clarity and creativity.

If you’ve taken a blues class with me where I go deep into the specifics of particular movements, you’ve probably been exposed to parts of this curriculum. And now you can experience the full program from the comfort of your own home—practicing at your own pace!

It can be purchased either under a subscription model or individually for evergreen access through the “shop” tab.

Join us for partner dance events infused with endless creativity fueled by strong technique.

Our community is built on respect, the willingness to say “yes” to new ideas, and the freedom to color outside the lines of traditional partner dancing. Each new dance is an entire experience unto itself.

We have our premier flagship festival in New York City, week long intensive learning retreats, and more intimate retreat style festivals in Europe.

We are explorers of movement, connection & music. We are investigators and creators.

“The blues lesson: It was very ambitious! Quite cool squeezing so much history and create a timeline like that in just a few hours of blues lessons.  The amount of historical background in the dance lessons was novel to me and I really enjoyed it. Gave me inspiration to learn more. ”

WHERE IS FLOUER?

WHAT IS BLUES?

The most basic definition of blues dancing is simply dancing to blues music.

The video to right is an example of Ballroom Blues, done to jazz blues music within black communities in large ballrooms beginning in the 1940s.

The international community of partner dancers that I teach within considers the label blues dancing an “umbrella term”, meaning a term that covers many styles of dance to match the many different styles of blues music.  We generally focus on styles of blues that date from the 1800’s to the early 1970’s, and don’t include music that involves a lot of modern rock influences.

Blues Dancing is brought together by an overall aesthetic, which is entirely rooted in African American movement.  It places a high value on improvisation, polyrhythm, call and response, and solo movement expression inside partnership.

WHAT IS FUSION

Fusion Partner Dancing is a community of worldwide partner dancers who are interested in dancing “outside” the boxes of traditional forms (such as tango or waltz).  Instead of dancing a specific form to a specific kind of music, they draw from the many techniques of all partner dances to create personal, improvisational expressions to music.

Because dancers are coming from such diverse backgrounds, fusion dance can look and feel very different depending on who is dancing it.  In it’s essence, fusion is the ability to be endlessly creative and say “yes!” to your partner, no matter what background they come from.

Most fusion communities use electronic music as a base for their sound because there is no traditional dance form already attached to this genre.  The eclectic moods and rhythms available also inspires people to be creative outside the movement they already know.  Depending on the scene you can also commonly hear classical music, pop, acoustic, folk, blues, soul, R&B, hip hop, sounds from Africa, the Middle East, and more.

“Comfort, Contrast & Texture” is Flouer’s mantra while DJing for a room full of Fusion dancers.  Hailing from New York City, she now lives happily in Turin, Italy when she isn’t traveling the world creating magical dance experiences.   While DJing, the dance floor is her tapestry as she spins rich, colorful portraits full of creativity and eclectic sounds from many places.  In her world, she seeks to lull you with the sweet sounds of familiar rhythms- then skyrocket you into starry realms, far past where you ever thought music could take you.  Dance is your playground, music is your jungle gym.  http://FlouerDances.com
